American Crime uses a very natural unpolished feel, so everything had to be completely unobtrusive and invisible.
As the edit took form, subtle alterations were necessary for several actors’ performances to not only make the changing narrative work, but to also cover several network censorship issues. With re-shoots unavailable, digital solutions were needed to address changes in either dialogue or an emotional expression via subtle facial tweaks (not seen here). Additionally, there were many medical prosthetic makeup fixes, scar removals, facial rebuilds to account for unexpected lighting changes and other beauty work, many of which were being achieved via a combination of 3D tracking and complex morphing. Throughout the series, there are multiple memory flashes. A unique look was developed using DI to give scenes a surreal tone and depart from the body of the show.
